Beginner Surf Lessons

New to surfing? You’re in the right place. Our beginner lessons are designed to get you from first-timer to first ride—with plenty of waves (and stoke) along the way!

What beginner lessons are available?

We’ve got two main beginner pathways to get you started:

  • Beginner Learn to Surf Lesson – Perfect if you’ve never surfed before (or only tried it once or twice).
  • Beginner Progressive Lesson – The next step once you’re confidently standing and riding whitewater.

Both run in The Bays, with soft, rolling white-water waves built for learning and progression.

What happens in a beginner lesson?

Each lesson is structured to help you build confidence quickly:

  • On land (approx. 30 mins)
Learn the basics—pop-up technique, safety, and positioning
  • In the water (approx. 55–60 mins)
Catch waves with guidance from your coach
  • Post-surf (approx. 15 mins)
Stretch, reset, and get feedback to level up next time

All up, you’re looking at a fully guided surf experience designed to fast-track your progression.

Do I need experience?

Nope—zero experience required. Beginner lessons are ideal if you:

  • Have never surfed before
  • Have tried surfing once or twice
  • Want to build confidence in a safe, controlled environment

If you’re already standing consistently and riding waves to shore, you’ll likely be ready for the Beginner Progressive lesson.

What’s included in a lesson?

We’ve got you covered from start to finish:

  • Wetsuit hire
  • Softboard hire
  • Expert coaching
  • Access to a safe, controlled wave environment

Just bring yourself (and a towel).

How many people are in a lesson?

  • Group lessons: Up to 8 participants per coach
  • Private lessons: 1–2 participants per coach

This keeps things personal, so you get plenty of waves and coaching time.

When can I book?

Lessons run at select times across weekdays, weekends and public holidays. We recommend booking in advance to secure your spot.

Is it suitable for kids?

Absolutely. Beginner lessons are open to all ages, with a few things to note:

  • All participants must be at least 6 years old to enter the lagoon.
  • Children 10 and under must have a parent or guardian present and in the water for the entire lesson.
  • A parent/guardian assist ticket is provided where required.

How do I progress after my first lesson?

Once you’ve nailed the basics, you can:

  • Move into Beginner Progressive lessons (learn to ride unbroken waves).
  • Practice in Surf in the Bays sessions
  • Keep building skills with point coaching sessions in Roller or Cruiser sessions.

Bottom line: If you’ve ever wanted to surf, this is where it starts—safe waves, expert coaching, and plenty of chances to stand up and ride.
