Which Side of the Lagoon Should I Choose?
When booking your surf session at URBNSURF, you'll be asked to select either the left or right side of the lagoon.
The best side for you depends on your surfing stance (natural or goofy footed) and whether you'd prefer to surf forehand or backhand.
What's the difference between left and right? The lagoon sides are labelled left and right when standing facing the lagoon. On both sides, waves break from the outside wall towards the central pier.
How do I know if I'm natural or goofy footed?Your surfing stance is determined by which foot you have forward when standing on your surfboard.
- Natural foot: Left foot forward, right foot at the back.
- Goofy foot: Right foot forward, left foot at the back.
If you're unsure, think about which foot you naturally place forward when skateboarding or surfing.
What's the difference between forehand and backhand?- Forehand: You're facing the wave as you surf, with your chest towards the wave face.
- Backhand: Your back is towards the wave as you surf.
Most beginners find forehand easier, but practising both directions is a great way to develop your surfing.
So, which side should I book?
| Your stance | Forehand | Backhand |
|---|---|---|
| Natural foot | Right side | Left side |
| Goofy foot | Left side | Right side |
Not sure which side to choose?
If you're new to surfing, we recommend starting with your forehand side, as this generally feels more natural.
As you progress, try surfing both sides of the lagoon to build your confidence and improve your skills!
